Metro, train, bus, bike, on foot: what the guide says about Saint-Léonard, and a clear verdict: with a single car.
Living in Saint-Léonard without a car. Verdict: With a single car. The borough has no metro yet: Jean-Talon, Lacordaire, Langelier and Viau buses reach the green and blue lines (Saint-Michel, Viau, Cadillac stations). Parc Wilfrid-Bastien (aquatic complex, Martin-Brodeur arena, library) is the borough's leisure heart; Ladauversière, Ferland and Giuseppe-Garibaldi parks complete the offer. Pro: Houses with garage and garden on the island, quiet streets, Italian shops on foot and the future Blue Line stations. Con: No metro until the Blue Line opens: today, Saint-Léonard is lived by car and by bus on Jean-Talon. For families who want a real house with a garage and a garden on the island, a calm neighbourhood and Italian shops on foot, and who accept the car for the rest.
Living in Saint-Léonard without a car: what our neighbourhood guide says about the metro, the train, the bus, the bike lanes and what is done on foot, then a clear verdict, deduced from a rule we write out in full. No commute time is invented: the sentences are the guide's, and the figures are those published by the APCIQ.
The guide names the bus, or a train that neighbourhood life is not enough to replace: a household lives here with a single car, not without one.
"Without a car, yes" when the guide names a metro, a REM or a train serving the neighbourhood, without the guide saying it is lived by car. "With a single car" when the guide names only the bus, or a train that neighbourhood life is not enough to replace. "A car is a must" when no metro, REM or train serves the neighbourhood on foot and the guide says it is lived by car. The rule is the same for all 53 neighbourhoods; it does not replace your real commute on a Tuesday morning.
For families who want a real house with a garage and a garden on the island, a calm neighbourhood and Italian shops on foot, and who accept the car for the rest. Less so for those who want a metro today or nightlife: Saint-Léonard goes to bed early.
With a single car. The guide names the bus, or a train that neighbourhood life is not enough to replace: a household lives here with a single car, not without one.
The borough has no metro yet: Jean-Talon, Lacordaire, Langelier and Viau buses reach the green and blue lines (Saint-Michel, Viau, Cadillac stations). The blue line extension, under construction, will add Pie-IX, Viau, Lacordaire, Langelier and Anjou stations; the STM is aiming for 2031. Highways 40 and 25 are at the door, which makes Saint-Léonard practical for anyone working in Laval, on the North Shore or in the east.
The real commute to work on a Tuesday morning, at rush hour, and the walking distance to the grocery store, the school and the daycare from the shortlisted street: two streets in the same neighbourhood are not equal. No metro until the Blue Line opens: today, Saint-Léonard is lived by car and by bus on Jean-Talon.
