Renting out your own principal residence short-term is allowed in Chelsea, but with limits; buying a unit to rent it on Airbnb year-round (tourist residence) is possible only in specific zones. To buy, count on $820,000 for a house at the 2026 median price (Centris). Rules checked on October 19, 2026.

Principal residence establishments are allowed only in single-family dwellings (H1), in zones where housing is permitted, except zone RES-CV-1, with caps: 2 per zone within the urban perimeters of the village centre and Farm Point (4 in MIX1-CV-2 and MIX1-CV-4), 15 in total in the village centre, 10 in Farm Point, 40 certificates for the rest of the territory, on a first-come, first-served basis. Maximum 6 bedrooms, rental of 31 days or less, prohibited in an additional dwelling unit. According to the council announcement (March 2023), prohibited on chemin Valleyview and chemin Vincent.
A unit that is not your principal residence, rented by the night or the week all year, is a "tourist residence". The law does not protect it: the city decides through its zoning where it is allowed.
The Municipality states that secondary residences and cottages, additional dwelling units and secondary buildings are prohibited for short-term accommodation. The tourist residence exists only as a commercial use (subclass C2-9, light accommodation with 10 bedrooms or fewer) in zones where this class is allowed, with a maximum of 2 per zone.
