Schools, parks, commutes, space and price: what downtown Montreal offers a family, and what it has to accept, said before the visit.
Living in downtown Montreal (Ville-Marie) with a family. The neighbourhood falls under the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal and the English Montreal School Board; McGill, Concordia and UQAM have their campuses there, along with Cégep du Vieux-Montréal and Dawson (at the edge). Mount Royal is the neighbourhood's great park, with Mount Royal Park and its lookouts; the Old Port, Place des Festivals, Dorchester Square, Parc La Fontaine (on the northern edge) and the quays complete it. Everything converges on Ville-Marie: the green and orange lines (Bonaventure, McGill, Peel, Guy-Concordia, Place-des-Arts, Berri-UQAM, Square-Victoria, Place-d'Armes, Champ-de-Mars, Beaudry, Papineau, Lucien-L'Allier), Central Station (VIA Rail, exo, REM to the South Shore and Deux-Montagnes), the underground RÉSO, the Ville-Marie and Bonaventure expressways. Pro: Work, universities, hospitals, shows and the metro on foot: the only neighbourhood where a car is truly useless. Con: Tower condo fees (pool, gym, concierge) weigh heavily every month and rise with the building's age. For those who work downtown and want to live there without a car, for professionals passing through, graduate students and investors who rent to that market. Less so for families who want a yard, a neighbourhood school on foot and long-time neighbours: downtown turns over fast, and condos there barely rose in five years.

For a family, the commute is measured at rush hour, with the detour by the daycare or the school: do it once on a Tuesday morning before deciding.
