Renovation · Windows and doors · 2026 grant
Rénoclimat gives $150 per opening, not per window, and only if the evaluation came first. Here is the math on a bungalow, what counts, what is excluded and why windows still sell.
In 2026, the only grant for replacing windows and doors in Quebec is Rénoclimat's: $150 per existing rough opening in a wall or roof, replaced with an ENERGY STAR certified window, door or patio door, with no cap per house other than the general $20,000 maximum. A three-panel bay window or a door with sidelights counts as one opening; garage doors and windows, added openings and partial replacements are excluded. The condition that costs hurried owners: the Rénoclimat energy evaluation ($150 plus tax, refunded) must take place before the work, and the post-work visit confirms the certification. A bungalow with ten windows and two doors gets $1,800 on work that often costs $15,000 to $25,000: the grant covers 7 to 12%, and heating savings do the rest. The interest-free federal loan that financed windows has been closed since October 2025.
The Rénoclimat participant guide (table 8) sets the aid at $150 "per rough opening in the wall or roof", for a door as for a window. The rough opening is the one framed to install the product: a bay window made of three windows in one opening earns a single aid, as does a patio door or an entry door with its sidelights. The product must be ENERGY STAR certified (transoms and sidelights of a door too), appear in the searchable product list, and be installed in an existing opening: adding a window earns nothing. Keep the ENERGY STAR stickers and the invoices: the advisor checks them at the post-work visit.
| House | Openings replaced | Rénoclimat aid | Typical cost of the work | Share subsidized |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970s bungalow | 10 windows + 2 doors | $1,800 | $15,000 to $25,000 | 7% to 12% |
| Two-storey cottage | 16 windows + 3 doors (one patio door) | $2,850 | $25,000 to $40,000 | 7% to 11% |
| Condo (unit windows) | 4 windows + 1 patio door | $750 | $6,000 to $10,000 | 8% to 12% |
| Duplex | 12 windows + 4 doors | $2,400 (same amounts as a house) | $20,000 to $30,000 | 8% to 12% |
Work costs are 2026 market orders of magnitude for installed ENERGY STAR double-glazed windows; they vary with size, PVC or hybrid, and region. In a multi-unit building, doors and windows stay at house amounts, with no multiplier (unlike insulation).
Registration with Rénoclimat, pre-work energy evaluation ($150 plus tax, refunded if aid is paid), report, work by the contractor of your choice, free post-work evaluation, payment. Windows installed before the first visit are not eligible, even if certified: it is the number one cause of refused claims. Count a few weeks to get the visit depending on the region, and do it before signing with the manufacturer.
The Canada Greener Homes Loan (up to $40,000 interest-free over ten years), which often financed windows, has been closed to new applications since October 1, 2025; the Canada Greener Homes Grant is over. Hydro-Québec does not subsidize windows (LogisVert covers roof insulation, not openings). There is no provincial tax credit for windows. RénoPlex, in Montreal, includes openings in its work categories for eligible buildings, and RénoRégion includes them for modest-income owners outside the large cities.
On the South Shore, recent windows show on the listing and reassure the inspector, but they rarely come back in full in the price: the buyer of a $600,000 bungalow does not pay $25,000 more for the windows. They are justified if the old ones are fogged, rotten or single-glazed, if you stay five years, or if the inspection would flag them anyway. Our page renovating before selling details the return by type of work.
