We found no restriction adopted by the city on renting out a principal residence. No municipal rule specific to the principal residence establishment found. The City's official fact sheet on tourist accommodation (Airbnb, B&B) deals only with the tourist residence, which must not be located in the owner's principal residence, and with the B&B (secondary use in a detached single-family home).
By default, Quebec law prevents a municipal by-law from prohibiting the rental of a principal residence unless it was adopted under the adapted referendum procedure (s. 23). Before counting on it, have the zone of the address confirmed by the planning department: it issues the zoning compliance document required for registration.
A unit that is not your principal residence, rented by the night or the week all year, is a "tourist residence". The law does not protect it: the city decides through its zoning where it is allowed.
The tourist residence is a use in the commercial accommodation class « Chôt », permitted only in zones where this class is authorized; 1 parking space per bedroom. Since by-law 1473-2026 (in force on June 23, 2026), the definition covers any establishment where at least one accommodation unit (bed, room, suite, apartment, house or cottage) is offered for rent for payment for 31 days or less, which includes renting a single room; the principal residence of the natural person who operates it, rented to one person or a single group at a time without meals, is excluded from this use.
