Living in Lachine: the 2026 neighbourhood guide

Living in Montreal · Lachine · 2026 neighbourhood guide

The island's most affordable lakefront, an old village, a commuter train: Lachine, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, with the numbers.

Lachine is the borough of the canal: the Lachine Canal opens there into Lac Saint-Louis, between Parc René-Lévesque and its sculpture peninsula, the marina, the Lachine museum and Old Lachine with its streets of old houses. Behind it, streets of duplexes and post-war houses, the more affordable Saint-Pierre neighbourhood, and an industrial park bordering the airport. The QPAREB groups it with LaSalle: single-family home at $730,000 (+1 % year over year, +26 % in five years) in 42 days in Q2 2026, condo at $420,000 (-7 %) in 53 days. Exo Lachine station (Vaudreuil-Hudson line), Highways 20 and 13, Hôpital de Lachine.

The character of Lachine

Lachine is one of the island's oldest settlements, and it shows in Old Lachine: narrow streets, stone and brick houses, the church, the convent, the museum and the old canal turned into a park. Parc René-Lévesque, a peninsula of monumental sculptures reaching into Lac Saint-Louis, and the riverside promenade of boulevard Saint-Joseph give the borough a waterfront few Montreal neighbourhoods can offer. The rest of Lachine is a post-war residential neighbourhood, duplexes and small houses, with the Saint-Pierre neighbourhood, enclosed between Highway 20 and the railway, more working-class and affordable, and a large industrial park to the north, along the airport and Highway 13.

The neighbourhoods, and what sets them apart

Old Lachine and boulevard Saint-Joseph, along the lake, concentrate the character houses and the condos with a view, the priciest. The centre, around rue Notre-Dame and 32e Avenue, mixes shops, duplexes and rental buildings. The west, toward Dorval, lines up quiet streets of single-family homes. Saint-Pierre, to the east, offers the borough's lowest prices in a plex fabric.

Getting around

The Lachine station of the exo Vaudreuil-Hudson line leads to Central Station; the du Canal station, in Saint-Pierre, serves the same line. Buses on Notre-Dame, Saint-Joseph and Victoria reach Angrignon and Lionel-Groulx metro. Highways 20 and 13, the Dorval interchange and Montréal-Trudeau airport are at the door, which makes Lachine practical for anyone working in the west or travelling often. The Lachine Canal path leads to the Old Port by bike.

Parks, leisure and shops

Parc René-Lévesque, the canal promenade, the marina and Parc Monk, on the lake, form one of the island's finest waterfronts; Parc Kirkland and Parc Duff-Court complete the sports offer, with the arenas and the pool. Rue Notre-Dame and boulevard Saint-Joseph have the neighbourhood shops and Old Lachine's restaurants; big-box stores are along Highway 20 and in Dorval.

Schools, health and services

The borough falls under the Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys and the Lester B. Pearson School Board. Hôpital de Lachine, part of the McGill University Health Centre, is on site. Saul-Bellow library, arenas, pool and cultural centre; the Lachine museum on the canal.

Who Lachine is for, and who it is not for

For those who want the lake, an old village and a commuter train, at a price below Dorval or Pointe-Claire; for families working at the airport, in the industrial park or in the west. Less so for those who want the metro on foot or dense urban life: Lachine is a quiet waterfront, not a central neighbourhood.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a condo cost in Lachine?

The sector's median condo was $420,000 in Q2 2026 (-7 % year over year, 19 % in five years), sold in 53 days according to the APCIQ. The actual price depends on the building, the floor and the condition.

And a house or a plex?

The median single-family home was $730,000 in Q2 2026 (1% year over year), in 42 days. Plexes (2 to 5 units) make up a large share of the housing stock; their price is documented on closed sales on the street, not on a borough average.

Is Lachine a good neighbourhood for a family?

Yes for a family that wants the waterfront, an old village, parks and a commuter train, at a price below the West Island's. The trade-off is no metro and the airport and highways to the north.
